In project A02, we are looking for a PhD student in the field of physical geography, soil science or environmental engineering with a focus on soil physics or subsurface hydrology. Skills in quantitative data analysis and experience with laboratory soil analysis as well as field work are desirable.

In project A03, we are looking for a PhD student in the field of micro-meteorology and water stable isotope ecohydrology, with a background in soil-plant-atmosphere interactions and process-based modeling. He/She will be responsible for the deployment of the mobile field laboratory to the different test sites and collect the isotope data needed for simulation.

In project A04, we are looking for a Postdoc researcher in the field of radar polarimetry, with a background in processing of radar data, their microphysical information content, and optimally experience in their application for model evaluation using forward operators and/or retrievals.

In project B04, we are looking for two PhD students in the field of agricultural economics, with some experience in quantitative analysis/data science and an interest in (Bayesian) Econometrics/Machine Learning. One PhD student, supervised by Prof Heckelei, will focus on the Bayesian approach to merge existing data sources. The second PhD student, supervised by Dr Storm, focuses on combining data driven deep learning approaches with econometric approaches considering economic or biophysical information.

The PhD student will be conducting lab- and field-based soil respiration measurements and assess climate and land use-specific effects on CO2 release across Europe. The successful candidate will develop a two-way coupling between a regional atmospheric model and a global unstructured-mesh ocean model to better constrain the ocean’s role in feeding the terrestrial branch of the water cycle.
